Sport Oakville History

Sport Oakville (formerly Oakville Sports Council) has been a work in progress ever since the umbrella organization was re-established in 2000. However, Sport Oakville has never lost sight of its mandate and primary objective: to provide a collective voice for sport in Oakville.

There are a number of areas in which Sport Oakville has been involved over the last few years but in 2004/05 the Oakville Sports Council made a conscious effort to get back to grass roots in support of our sports organizations. By providing a voice for the advancement of sports concerns to both politicians and staff, the Oakville Sports Council spent many hours bringing the message of sports forward to the decision makers while continuing to provide support through funding and training. Some of those issues were seen in the development of the residency requirements, ice allocation policy, Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan, and the Rzone (zero tolerance) policy.
Education and training is a large component of the Sport Oakville and continues to offer workshops and seminars of interest to the membership.

Recently, changing times and attitudes have added new dimensions to the mandate. Encouraging all residents to be lifelong participants in safe, accessible and equitable sport and recreation through connectivity, promotion and communication, education and development, recognition of excellence is a mission of great importance in meeting the sports and physical activity needs of our community.

This explains why Sport Oakville is – in partnership with the Town, the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation and the Oakville Business Community – developing a sport and physical activity plan. As part of the ACTIVE 2010 provincial strategy that encourages a culture of physical activity and sports participation en masse, the Oakville plan will be the blueprint for the community in assessing and increasing Oakville’s participation rates in sport and physical activity. The plan will be completed by May 2006.

These are some of the accomplishments and endeavours of Sport Oakville. To be part of this dynamic group, join now!
